Paul’s in prison, but he’s got a bigger picture of what God is doing in the world than his own circumstances. He knows what God is doing, he knows that God loves him, and he knows that because of what God has started in the Jesus & the church, the suffering he is now experiencing will one day not exist. (Apologies for the sound quality in the second half of the church. Stuff breaks. If it’s too bad, you can always listen to a Keller talk.)
After giving his readers a sweep of the amazing things they benefit in because they are in Christ, Paul now reveals what he wants for them. That they know not merely what God has done for them, but that they know God himself.
Who are you? What defines you? As Paul starts his letter to the church in Ephesus he wants his readers to know that the place we need to start is Jesus. He is the place we find all we need to understand ourselves and be whole again.
