Songs of the King: Psalm 110

By Songs of The King - Holiday Series in Psalms, Talks

Have you ever been led to believe that someone is something and then realised that that person is not the person you thought they were? Have you ever watched a TV drama or movie and felt like you have been let down by a character who proved to be someone you didn’t expect them to be?

That is what it’s been like these last few months as we have looked at the Great King David and the wise King Solomon. They seemed to offer us so much but in the end they never lived up to the hype. King David seemed to sense, as he looked down his future family line, that something could never be quite right. He looked to a king like no other. He looked to a king who would never disappoint or let us down. A king that on the one hand was terrifying and on the other unfathomably comforting. This is the king, David introduces us to this morning in Psalm 110.

Songs of the King: Psalm 72

By Songs of The King - Holiday Series in Psalms, Talks

We’ve spent a few weeks in the start of 1 Kings, and we’re about to dive right back in after the holidays. But as a bridge, we’ll be spending the holidays in a few of the Psalms, where we’ll hear the Songs of the King: A few Psalms written by Israel’s king, about life as a king under God, which would one day be sung and lived out by a greater king, Jesus Christ.

Solomon’s Fall (1 Kings 10-11)

By 1 Kings, Talks

This week, we come to the end of Solomon’s story, and we watch the world flock to Solomon because of his great kingdom and great wisdom. But at the height of his power, Solomon’s heart turns from the Lord in every way imaginable, and we watch one of the greatest falls from grace in history. So what can we learn from this tragic final chapter to Solomon’s life, and where can we find hope in the rubble? We can only look to a greater Son of David, whose heart would never move from having faithful love for his Heavenly Father.

Hear in Heaven (1 Kings 8-9)

By 1 Kings, Talks

Last week in 1 Kings, we saw the temple being built. This week, we’re going to see the opening ceremony for the temple. But almost everything in this ceremony will raise questions for us. The answer comes as the chapter pushes us to its heart, to find that forgiveness is the answer of everything that’s happening here, and ultimately, the answer is the forgiveness that Jesus gives us through his cross.

The Wise One (1 Kings 3-4)

By 1 Kings, Talks

One of the hardest things we’ll have to face about ourselves is the fact that we’re inconsistent. Even Solomon, the wisest man in the world, lived an inconsistent life. Luckily for us, Solomon sheds some wisdom on how & how not to live. Which ultimately points us to the truly Wise One – Jesus – who gives us wisdom from above.

Messy Background (1 Kings 1-2)

By 1 Kings, Talks

Most of us try to hide our mess, but Israel’s national history lets it all hang out! As we start 1 Kings, we’ll see even the “golden era” under Solomon has messy beginnings. It leads us to Solomon’s descendant Jesus, born into this messy world, to meet us in our messy lives.
