Of Wars and Vineyards (1 Kings 20-21)

By 1 Kings, Talks

Knowledge isn’t something that’s stagnant. Knowing that a snake can bite you means you don’t go around picking up snakes. You know someone loves you not just by having information about that person but because that person has showed you that they love you. It’s the same with knowing God. This morning in 1 Kings 19-21, we will see that knowing God is not just about learning facts about God about God, it’s also about how we respond to what we know about Him so we can live in relationship with him. After years of Israel spiralling out of control, God steps in to work in a completely unexpected way. Enter Elijah the prophet, who challenges the prophets of Baal to a battle of the gods, with the odds absolutely stacked against him. But this is when God likes to do his best work—which we see best in the cross. When no one expected God to win, that was when he was doing his best saving work: in bringing forgiveness for his people.

The Word of the Lord (1 Kings 13)

By 1 Kings, Talks

We hit a strange story in 1Kings 13 this week. A lying prophet and a gullible prophet, with a lion and donkey thrown in for good measure. The best clue as to what’s going on is that it’s all about “the word of the Lord.” How do you know what’s the real word of the Lord? How do you respond when you do? The recent Essendon/City on a Hill controversy has raised again the question of why Christians take the Bible seriously, often dismissed as a “2000 year old document”, making it timely that we consider how seriously we should take God’s word and why.

A Divided Kingdom (1 Kings 12)

By 1 Kings, Talks

We’re back in 1 Kings and things are not off to a good start! 1 Kings 12 sees the Kingdom of Israel split. From here on out, God’s relationship with his Kings will also be fractured. And yet, despite human sin & stupidity running wild, we still see footprints of God’s grace throughout chapter 12. We see how God is still at work in his world, loving us despite our folly and working to save us from ourselves. A great comfort if you’re someone who feels like you can never seem to get things right!

Songs of the King: Psalm 110

By Songs of The King - Holiday Series in Psalms, Talks

Have you ever been led to believe that someone is something and then realised that that person is not the person you thought they were? Have you ever watched a TV drama or movie and felt like you have been let down by a character who proved to be someone you didn’t expect them to be?

That is what it’s been like these last few months as we have looked at the Great King David and the wise King Solomon. They seemed to offer us so much but in the end they never lived up to the hype. King David seemed to sense, as he looked down his future family line, that something could never be quite right. He looked to a king like no other. He looked to a king who would never disappoint or let us down. A king that on the one hand was terrifying and on the other unfathomably comforting. This is the king, David introduces us to this morning in Psalm 110.
